Medicines development has evolved from a relatively small, physician-led activity into a complex global endeavour involving multiple scientific disciplines and professional backgrounds. Chopra argues that this community increasingly meets the hallmarks of a mature profession: specialised knowledge, shared competencies, formal education and training, professional associations, codes of ethics, career pathways, accountability and a common purpose centred on improving health. The paper also examines what still holds the profession back, including inconsistent credentialing, siloed identities, variable training standards, weak recognition, difficult-to-measure outcomes and the disruptive impact of digital technologies and AI. Its central message is that medicines development should be recognised not merely as an occupation, but as a profession built on competence, trust, ethics, lifelong learning and shared identity.
